Although Koh Samui is a relatively small island when compared to Phuket, it has a unique reputation as having some of the most upscale leisure destinations, known not just in Thailand but the world over. You may be tempted not to leave your accommodations, especially if you’re staying at any of Koh Samui’s luxurious full-service private villas.

It’s certainly worth seeing and experiencing all the exciting places and activities that await every Koh Samui guest. From the north coast down to the south coast, there is beauty to appreciate. Here is our list of places and things worth seeing, coast by coast, throughout Koh Samui.

The North Coast

The northern part of the island is home to a string of idyllic and pristine beaches that would surely captivate each traveler. In recent years, however, this part of Koh Samui has seen significant developments as far as tourism and commerce is concerned, and it’s now gaining in popularity among visitors.

1. Bophut Beach

Once a popular fishing village and the island’s main French outpost, Bophut Beach is fast becoming Samui’s most elegant and well-preserved area on the island. Modern buildings, interspersed with a line of old wooden Chinese shops, give this area a distinct Mediterranean vibe. Absolutely a must-visit, especially around the area of Fisherman’s Village where night markets mingle with upscale restaurants and bars.

2. Maenam Beach

Maenam is considered as Samui’s predominantly backpacker beach. Most of the resorts are located at the end of the long-winded pathways, giving some degree of privacy that cannot be found anywhere on the island. Maenam is a perfect destination for those who are seeking peace and quiet or want to stay for a few weeks, as there are a number of villas within the area.

The Eastern Coast

The eastern coast of Koh Samui is home to two of the most well-known tourist enclaves on the island. They’re popular locations for hotels, restaurants, and bars, as well as family-friendly establishments and water sports. They’re also accessible from the main highway that circles around Koh Samui.

3. Chaweng Beach

This beach is the most popular among visitors, not to mention the most developed, and probably the best that the island can offer. Chaweng never runs out of upscale resorts and five-star hotels. During high season, the beach overflows with tourists because of its very inviting white sand beach. Water activities also abound in Chaweng, with jet ski rentals being popular among visitors.

4. Choeng Mon

Not too far from Chaweng is Choeng Mon, often seen as the more relaxed alternative to Chaweng. Here the establishments lean more on the spectrum of wholesome beachside restaurants and kid-friendly activities, not to mention laid-back resorts. This is also a great place to get massages by the beach, thanks to the presence of spas in the area.

5. Lamai Beach

A list of beaches on the eastern shore of Koh Samui is not complete without Lamai Beach. Families flock to this part of the island because the beach here does not have as many stones and corals, and the waves are mild enough for swimming. There are also resorts and hotels on Lamai, though not as heavily populated as Bophut or Chaweng.

The Central Inlands

Koh Samui’s inlands remain an underrated part of the islands. Large coconut plantations and lush forests can still be found in this part of the island, along with waterfalls and nature trails. Visiting inland Koh Samui, however, requires careful planning, as the main sights are not always easily accessible from the main roads.

6. Na Muang Waterfalls

Guests are captivated by the magnificent Na Muang waterfalls, making this part of the island a true paradise. Visitors love to wade through icy-cool waters or to explore the inviting jungle path. There are two waterfalls in the Na Muang area, and both are worth exploring for their refreshingly clean waters as well as photogenic sights.

7. Tarnim Secret Buddha Garden

This intriguing attraction was built by a local farmer, allegedly to attract more visitors to Koh Samui. Apparently his strategy has paid off, since the Secret Buddha Garden has become a popular venue for photo ops among guests. The garden features over 100 statues, not just of the incarnations of Buddha but also of dancers and animals. While the garden does not count as a Buddhist temple, proper temple etiquette still applies when it comes to approaching the statues of Buddha.

The Southern Coast

While the southern coast does not see much in terms of tourist developments, it’s still home to a few sights worth seeing. This part of Koh Samui has striking temples and religious structures, as well as a beach with the most stunning sunsets.

8. Wat Ratchathammaram

Best known as the Red Temple for its unusual brick-red hue, Wat Ratchathammaram (also known as Wat Sila Ngu or “Stone Snake Temple”) stands out among Koh Samui’s most popular temples. It’s also one of the most sacred sites on Koh Samui, adorned by stone dragons on the exterior guarding the temple’s most hallowed spaces and the golden image of Buddha situated inside. Intricate carvings also adorn the walls, demonstrating artistry, culture, and spirituality.

9. Laem Sor Pagoda

Speaking of beautiful sacred places, the golden Laem Sor Pagoda sits on a highland overlooking the southern coast. Like Wat Ratchathammaram, the pagoda is decorated with intricate artwork, making it an intriguing location to explore spirituality and learn more about Thai culture. The view of the beaches from Laem Sor is also worth a few photogenic moments, especially at sunset.

10. Taling Ngam Beach

Taling Ngam stretches toward the southwest shore of Koh Samui, with high-end resorts and vacation rentals dotting the beachfront. The waters are shallow enough for kids to swim in, but what really makes Taling Ngam special is the brilliantly-hued sunset over the southwestern horizon. You can enjoy this view from the beach itself, but for those craving a more sophisticated experience, head over to Air Bar at the Intercontinental Hotel and Resort to pair the view with some cocktails.

The Western Coast

Development on the western coast of Koh Samui has not evolved at the same pace as places like Chaweng or Bophut, but there are still a few locations worth mentioning. Lipa Noi Beach is home to a few extravagant private villas as well as a beautiful sunset view. Nathon, on the other hand, is home to both a local-friendly beach and a pier where residents usually catch ferries to neighboring islands.
